1. Introducing Cochrane’s Focused Review Format - webinar recording now available

Cochrane’s new Focused Review Format launched in August 2023. One of the main drivers of this change was to simplify reporting for authors and to help achieve this we have created a new template for intervention reviews to guide authors on what to report and where. This template contains essential guidance on conducting a review and reporting the findings.

In the web clinic, Ella Flemyng (Head of Editorial Policy and Research Integrity) and Rachel Richardson (Methods Support Unit Manager) introduced the template, talked through key features, and gave recommendations for its use.

2. Help us to keep improving the Focused Review Format by completing our short survey

Just a reminder that we want your help! We want the new review format to be clear and simple to use. With that in mind, we are inviting Cochrane authors to participate in a 15-minute survey before 5 March 2024 to give us feedback on the changes and help us prioritise the areas that you would find most useful. Find out more and complete the survey here.

3. A new chapter of the Cochrane-Campbell Handbook for Qualitative Evidence Synthesis is now available

A new chapter of the Cochrane-Campbell Handbook for Qualitative Evidence Synthesis is now available on the Cochrane Training Website. Sign in using your Cochrane Account to read: Chapter 14 Integrating qualitative and quantitative evidence

If you would like feedback on any draft chapters, please use this Form.

4. Cochrane has launched a new Interactive Learning module on qualitative evidence synthesis

Cochrane is delighted to announce the launch of the twelfth module within the Cochrane Interactive Learning course, on qualitative evidence synthesis (QES). The module, designed to be completed in about 90 minutes, aims to provide participants with a solid foundation in framing a QES question, scoping a topic, assessing available evidence, synthesizing data, and proficiently presenting findings in a comprehensive report.

5. RetractoBot: what is it, and do authors need to take any action?

Some authors may have recently received an email from a platform named RetractoBot, alerting them to a retracted study cited in their Review. RetractoBot is an automated system developed by researchers at the University of Oxford: https://www.retracted.net/. It is a crawler that identifies retractions and then automatically emails the authors of any papers citing them, irrespective of context or reason for the citation/retraction.

It is author’s own decision as to whether or not to engage with the email. In regards to their Cochrane review, the only reason they would need to update the review is if one of the listed retractions was one of the included studies. Within Cochrane we are formalising the process for removing retracted included studies from published reviews, which will be available to share in the coming months.

6. Last session in the Cochrane Rapid Reviews & Learning Live webinar series

Please join us on 12 March 2024, for the last webinar of this series entitled: "How to do a rapid scoping review" hosted by the Rapid Reviews Methods Group. These sessions are designed to provide a clear roadmap, helping you navigate the intricacies of rapid review methodologies.

Watch the recording of previous sessions here.

7. Component network meta-analysis: concepts and insights webclinic

Network meta-analysis is a statistical method that allows for comparing three or more interventions in a single framework, by synthesizing direct and indirect evidence from multiple studies which address the same scientific question. Healthcare interventions are often complex (or multicomponent), comprising multiple, possibly interacting, components.

While NMA focuses on estimating intervention effects, component NMA (CNMA) disentangles the effect of each component. In this web clinic, Sofia Tsokani will introduce CNMA and discuss its benefits and limitations.

8. Covidence: new feature release in Extraction 1

Outcomes and timepoints are defined on the template for consistent data collection. You can now select which outcomes and timepoints are included in the study for more accurate reporting.

10. Top tips for Cochrane Authors

Showing study names

The options available to display data in Funnel plots also include showing study names. This option is  turned off by default due to instances where study names overlap. If this is not the case, authors can decide if they want to turn the feature on.

Please note that how study names are displayed in the figure in RevMan corresponds to how they will appear in the review version downloaded for submission.
